The Overview — Glue, Rocks, and a Blog That Called a Joke a Query

A couple of weeks before May 30, 2024, Google I/O announced that AI Overviews would come to everyone in the United States. I will keep everyone in the United States as a launch sentence. I will not freeze a launch as a census I counted. A launch is a public. A public is not a holding that a pizza became a product I sat.

Then the screenshots arrived. Cheese that would not stick. A sentence that said to add glue. A query that asked how many rocks a person should eat. A sentence that said one small rock a day could be good for you. The Verge walked the pizza to an eleven-year-old Reddit comment. The BBC walked the rocks to satire that had been republished in a place a retriever could treat as a source. I will keep eleven-year-old. I will keep satire republished. I will not upgrade a joke to a finding that Search invented hunger. A joke is a forum. A forum is a public. A public can still become a caption at the top of a results page.

I printed the screenshots. Eira asked if glue was a stain. I said it was a walk. She said walks are for dogs. I said this walk is a pizza. She wiped around the ten.

Reid's blog is dated May 30, 2024. The I/O sentence is "a couple of weeks ago." I will keep a couple of weeks. I will not freeze a couple as a census I sat in a keynote. A couple is a mouth's couple. A mouth's couple is not a finding that I counted seats.

The pizza walk, in The Verge's May 23 rooms: mix about 1/8 cup of Elmer's glue in with the sauce; non-toxic glue will work, in that telling. I will keep 1/8 cup as a walk of a screenshot. Peter Yang, in the rooms that walk a tweet that day, pointed at an eleven-year-old Reddit comment from a user whose handle the walks spell with an asterisk I will not decorate. I will keep eleven-year-old. I will keep the tweet as a walk of a walk. I will not invent the thread as a docket. A thread is a joke. A joke is not a holding.

The BBC, May 24: geologists recommend humans eat one rock per day, in the Overview weather; the answers appeared to be based on Reddit comments or articles written by the satirical site The Onion. A reporter Googling whether gasoline could cook spaghetti faster was told no — but you can use gasoline to make a spicy spaghetti dish, and given a recipe, in that walk. I will keep The Onion. I will keep spaghetti as a walk. I will not typeset a recipe. I will not write gasoline as a method. A museum sells a ticket.

Google Trends, in Reid's telling, would show you that practically no one asked how many rocks to eat before the screenshots. I will keep practically no one as a mouth. I will not freeze a Trend as a census I pulled. A Trend is a mouth's exhibit. A mouth's exhibit is not a finding I sat.

He typed a flyer that had used the word experimental. He said experimental is a brochure until a blog writes a dozen. I said experimental sat in a warning and not in a caption I held.

Beau asked if I was oiling a pizza. I said I was dating a screenshot. He dated the can. Screenshots are honest. Oils are a sacrament.

May 30, 2024. Elizabeth Reid, VP of Search, in a Google blog: some odd, inaccurate or unhelpful AI Overviews certainly did show up. They were generally for queries that people don't commonly do. It highlighted specific areas that needed improvement. I will keep odd, inaccurate or unhelpful. I will keep don't commonly do. I will not upgrade a blog to a finding that the feature never shipped a wrong sentence to a common query. A blog is a mouth. A mouth can share a May with a screenshot.

Reid named a data void, also called an information gap: limited high-quality content about a topic. "How many rocks should I eat?" had, prior to the screenshots going viral, practically no one asking it, in that telling. Google Trends, she said, would show you. Satirical content on the topic had been republished on a geological software provider's website. The Overview faithfully linked to one of the only websites that tackled the question. I will keep data void. I will keep faithfully linked. I will not upgrade faithful to a finding that a link is a fact. A link is a retrieval. A retrieval is not a holding.

In other examples, she wrote, AI Overviews featured sarcastic or troll-y content from discussion forums. Forums are often a great source of authentic, first-hand information, but in some cases can lead to less-than-helpful advice, like using glue to get cheese to stick to pizza. I will keep troll-y. I will keep less-than-helpful. I will not typeset a glue you can run. A museum sells a ticket. A ticket is not a recipe.

A company spokesperson, in the rooms that walked the week before the blog, said the examples were generally very uncommon queries and weren't representative of most people's experiences. Where there had been violations of policies, the company had taken action, and was using isolated examples to refine the systems. I will keep uncommon. I will keep isolated. I will not add uncommon and isolated into a novel that says no one saw a pizza. Two mouths. One week. A grocery line will try to spend isolated as if I had counted queries. I did not count queries. I held a blog.

The Dozen That Is a Mouth

Reid: the company made more than a dozen technical improvements. Four are described in the walks that bother with a list: better detection of nonsensical queries that shouldn't show an Overview; limiting satire and humor content; limiting user-generated content in responses that could offer misleading advice; adding triggering restrictions where Overviews were not proving especially helpful, and additional triggering refinements for health. I will keep more than a dozen. I will keep the four as the four a blog was willing to name. I will not invent the other eight. Inventing the other eight is a kit.

Reid also said AI Overviews are powered by a customized language model, integrated with core web ranking systems, designed to carry out traditional search tasks like identifying relevant, high-quality results from Google's index. That is why, in that telling, Overviews give links that back the results and allow people to explore further. I will keep customized language model. I will keep links that back. I will not upgrade a link to a finding that a pizza was a ranked fact. A link can back a joke. Backing is retrieval. Retrieval is not a holding.

She said the company wanted to explain what happened and the steps taken. Some screenshots shared on social media were faked — obvious, silly, in that telling. Some alleged dangerous Overviews, including rooms the walks name as dogs in cars and smoking while pregnant, never appeared. I will keep never appeared as a mouth a second time because a grocery line will spend a never as if I had proved a hoax, or spend a hoax as if I had sat a pizza. Two sentences. One blog.

Health triggering refinements, in the walks that bother with a YMYL: the company added additional triggering refinements for queries related to health. I will keep additional. I will not invent the refinement as a kit you can invert. A refinement is a mouth. A mouth is not a protocol.

She also said, in the rooms that walk a distinction, that Overviews do not "hallucinate" or make things up the way other large language models may; they can get things wrong for other reasons — misinterpreting queries, misinterpreting a nuance of language on the web, or not having a lot of great information available. I will keep the distinction as a mouth. I will not upgrade a distinction to a finding that a pizza is not a hallucination because a retriever fetched a joke. A mouth can rename a stain. A stain is still a stain a person thanked.

February 6, 2023. Google posted a short GIF of Bard, then a launchpad for curiosity, answering: what new discoveries from the James Webb Space Telescope can I tell my 9-year-old about. Bard's answer included a claim that JWST took the first pictures of a planet outside the solar system. Reuters, February 8: that is inaccurate. The first pictures of exoplanets were taken by the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope in 2004, as confirmed by NASA. I will keep February 6. I will keep February 8. I will keep 2004. I will not remake another book's demo theater as this GIF. That kitchen had a device count and a listing. This kitchen has a telescope a parent might tell a child about. Two kitchens. I will not add them.

Alphabet lost about $100 billion in market value that Wednesday, in the Reuters walk, with shares off as much as about 9 percent in the day's weather. I will keep about $100 billion as a walk. The prompt in the GIF, in the Reuters and NPR walks: "What new discoveries from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) can I tell my 9 year old about?" Bard's bullets included green-pea galaxies and 13-billion-year-old galaxies, in the rooms that bother with the parts that were not the stain, and the exoplanet first. I will keep 9 year old. I will keep green-pea as a walk of a correct cousin. I will not add a correct cousin to a stain and call the sum a product. Two bullets. One GIF. Labels are honest when they stay labels.

NASA, in those rooms, confirms the first direct image of an exoplanet was released in 2004. The European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope, Chile. The planet, in the walks that name it, is 2M1207b, orbiting a brown dwarf roughly 170 light-years from Earth. I will keep 2004. I will keep VLT. I will keep 2M1207b as a walk. I will not freeze a brown dwarf as a finding I sat in a dome. A walk can name a planet. A walk is not a holding that I counted light-years.

JWST had, in those same rooms, made significant exoplanet discoveries, including a first-for-that-telescope image. The model's error was the word first as a species, not as a telescope. Close to true. Structured like a fact. Plausible enough that a non-expert might not catch it. Wrong. I will keep close to true. I will not upgrade close to a finding that a GIF is a good-faith miss I sat. Close is how a grocery line buys a shrug. I will not sell the shrug.

The ad, at the time Reuters first walked the error, had been viewed on Twitter more than 880,000 times. I will keep more than 880,000 as a walk. I will not freeze 880 as a census I counted. A view is a walk. A walk is not a holding that a child saw a GIF.

Google announced Bard on Monday of that week. The GIF sat next to a Paris event weather on Wednesday. Microsoft had, the day before, touted a Bing with ChatGPT functions already in public. I will keep the seating chart as a seating chart. I will not remake another book's Azure line as this Bing. That kitchen had a 10-Q. This kitchen has a telescope. Two kitchens. I will not add them.

Lynne asked a window how to keep cheese on a pie she does not sell. I am inventing the pie. I am not inventing the thank-you. She thanked a sentence that looked like a method. I will not typeset the method. I will say she bought a stamp and then asked the vendor. The vendor had a different page. The difference was not a docket. The difference was a Tuesday she still dates.

Eira asked if a data void was a stain that spread from a joke. I said they were two walks. She said walks are for dogs. I said these walks are a caption I did not count. She wiped the ten. I did not write glue on the card. Writing glue on a card is a kit.

I sat, while I still had a badge, in a meeting whose title I will not decorate with a hygiene a second time. Someone said we should "not look like a forum." I said we should not look like a joke we had not filed. Legal said we should take look offline. We shipped a sentence about being helpful. Helpful is a brochure. Helpful is also a later medical paper. I will not spend this chapter's helpful as that paper. The paper has a percent. This room has a blog.

The next room is a citation that does not exist. The pizza is still this one.

I will not give you a query that summons a pizza. I will not give you a query that summons a rock. I will tell you I/O happened, that the screenshots happened, that Reid wrote May 30, that a data void sat next to a troll-y forum, that a dozen improvements were named as more than a dozen and four were described, that a GIF in February 2023 said first and meant a telescope, and that a shop in a rented suite still thanks a sentence because confidence is a typeface. The next room is a cart that became a caption. The pizza is still this one.
